CT in Hybrid Imaging for MPEs

The role of the Nuclear Medicine and PET Medical Physics Expert (MPE) is to help with image optimisation, patient dosimetry and quality assurance, and also give advice on matters relating to the radiation protection concerning medical exposure.

In recent years CT hybrid imaging (PET/CT and SPECT/CT) has gained widespread use in PET and Nuclear Medicine departments, with increasing clinical applications and availability of equipment.

CT image quality requirements in PET/CT and SPECT/CT will vary depending on clinical needs, and a good understanding of the fundamentals of CT imaging and CT patient dosimetry is essential to develop and implement protocols that fulfil the clinical needs whilst ensuring optimisation of patient dose.
